Dutch to fund commuter routes

We’ve had a bit of a European focus here on Going Going Bike this week. We featured Seville and Copenhagen on Monday and Wednesday respectively. Today news of investment from the Dutch authorities on expanding its cycling infrastructure outside the cycling mecca of Amsterdam.

The Dutch transport ministry has put aside 21m Euros to part fund 16 regional cycling specific routes to encourage people to get out on their bikes and commute to work.

Routes include links between Amsterdam and Haarlem, Rotterdam and The Hague and around Utrecht. The potential to get people cycling is huge with more than 50% of commuters living within 15 km of major Dutch cities and town.

Funding for the routes will also come from provincial and local government with investment in all routes being combined with 80m Euros.
