London police target pavement riders
Some interesting data on how London’s police forces, the Met and City of London, have been dealing with cycle offences in London were put up yesterday by BBC London’s Transport correspondent Tom Edward via his blog on the BBC website.
The data, extracted under the Freedom of Information Act, shows a police clampdown on people cycling on pavements. In the period from January to March this year there were 1,593 fixed penalty notices given to cyclists for riding on the pavement compared to 943 in the same period a year before. An increase of 70%.
Figures also show that overall fines given out to cyclists are increasing. In 2007 there were 5,089 fines given out compared to 6,724 in 2009.
In June of this year, Transport for London and the London police forces said they were stepping up the number of operations targeting cyclists who disobey the rules of the road, so its reasonable to expect that there will be a hike again this year in cycling offences recorded by the Met and City of London Police.

Yet again - Police looking for easy targets. I have just read elsewhere that you have 28days to decide whether to take the FPN or not. Is this true?
The Met and City of London were running a scheme where a FPN would be waived if you attended a cycle safety event but that was in June itself.

London police target pavement riders
Are there any official figures for the number of pedestrians that are killed or seriously injured by cyclists on pavements? I bet that number is very small compared to the number of pedestrians crossing roads and hit by cars. Why are cyclists being targeted as if we are motorised vehicles? Its crazy! Someetimes the pavement is the safest place for a cyclist to be.
