Here at Going Going Bike, we like our bike related fashion but we’re not quite sure what to make of the Hövding airbag collar which doubles as a potential bit of live saving kit.
Designed by Swedes Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin as a university thesis project, the collar deploys an airbag in the form of a hood if its in-built sensors detect a potential head impact. The sensors are able to detect an over-the-handlebars accident, a rear impact, and if the rider falls off the bike sideways.
A company has now been set up to sell the Hövding airbag collar and it is expected to go on sale next year for a price above 400 Euros. Hövding means “chieftain” in Swedish by the way.
Despite extensive testing into the product by the inventors, I’m not sure whether I would trust it, but how about you dear readers?
