A quicker commute

Anyone who travels to work far from their home can emphasise with the often mind numbing experience and time consuming it can be by a motor vehicle, particularly by public transport.

The use of the car is often quicker but in some cities, particularly in London, cycling is even quicker than a car from getting one point to another as well as being environmentally sound.

The long length of time it takes to commute by car is just not confined to London though. Research from online recruitment firm MyJobGroup, which surveyed over 1,800 commuters from Britain’s 12 largest cities, found that commuters who refused to leave their cars at home face the longest journeys to and from work.

Bristol boasts the highest proportion of commuters getting to work by eco-friendly means, with nearly a quarter (22%) of the workforce walking or cycling; four times more than Glaswegians who are seen to have the longest commute of the twelve cities.

Nearly half of the Glasgow workforce spent at least hour trying to get to work and back, shunning walking or cycling in favour of their cars. In contrast, just a quarter of Bristolians had to spend more than an hour commuting and a third got to work and back in less than 30 minutes with a bike.

Leeds also faired well in the study with residents there having relative short commute times due to their progressive commuting patterns; either using car-sharing schemes or walking/cycling.
