Want an employee to cycle to work, build a shed

The decision to cycle to work is not always easy. In some cases, the decision lies in the commitment to cycling from your workplace. While Cycle to Work schemes are welcome, not many workplaces provide secure bike parking facilities leaving employees to park in public spaces and open to their bicycles being stolen.
So it is great to see the commitment of Bristol-based international renewable energy consultancy GL Garrad Hassan, which actively encourages its employees to cycle to its offices in St Philips.
It has built a gigantic bike shed to cater for the near 50% of its employees that bike to work on a regular basis and hopes the storage facility will encourage more people at the organisation to cycle to work.
Accommodates 200 bikes
The shed, which accommodates 200 bicycles, was funded through a mixture of central government, local council funding and money from company founder Mr Garrad Hassan himself.
In addition to providing secure accommodation for bicycles, GL Garrad Hassan also provides showering and clothes drying facilities and hosts regular bike maintenance workshops at lunchtime, which are run by Bristol’s Cycling City team and the charity Lifecycle UK.
Facilities will encourage cycle take up
Bristol City Councillor Jon Rogers, cabinet member with responsibility for Care and Health, told Bristol’s Cycling City Better by Bike website that the Cycling City organisation had found that many businesses in Bristol were keen to develop their green travel credentials.
“We can all benefit from GL Garrad Hassan’s excellent example. When you provide the right facilities and enough of them, you can get your staff taking the healthy and sustainable approach to commuting very rapidly. Healthy and sustainable – a winning combination!”

Perhaps the UK’s fitest workforce then.
I might apply for a job there.
