Students attempt to dodge light fines

Today brings an update to an earlier story we featured here on Going Going Bike.

Several weeks ago, we brought you news of Thames Valley Police’s scheme to waive £30 fixed penalty notices for people they caught cycling without proper lights at night time if they bought a set of lights and showed the receipt at a police station in the region within seven days of being issued a penalty notice.

Well it appears clever students from Oxford have found a away of getting off the fine and then getting refunds for the lights from local bike shops.

Bike shop staff have reported that people, particularly students, have been returning lights to their shops after showing the receipts to their local police stations. Receipts have to be stamped by police stations but shop owners have said that they have been presented with receipts that have clearly cut out the police stamp.

Pc Mark Pilling told the Oxford Mail that the police force was unable to stop shops from offering refunds, but shop owners should be aware that if the receipt has been stamped it will have been used to prove purchase of a set of cycle lights and avoid paying a fine.
