Pothole table names and shames

A follow up to an earlier story featured on Going Going Bike. In early November we featured CTC’s attempts to get local authorities to repair road potholes and mentioned its www.fillthathole.org.uk website (and corresponding iPhone app) that allows cyclists and car owners alike to report a pothole/road hazard to their own relevant local authority.

The CTC have since produced a league table that ranks local authorities according to which authorities are best at fixing their road defects once reported. The CTC classifies a pothole/hazard as being fixed once it is reported back to them by the local authority or the original hazard reporter.

Top of the list for repairs are Cheshire West and Chester. Over 209 hazards were reported and 196 fixed. Next comes Redbridge with 27 hazards reported and 25 fixed. Luton follows in third place 18 hazards reported and 15 fixed.

The CTC ranks local authorities in term of percentage completion, therefore some authorities may have a high number of reported incidents and a high number of those fixed but the percentage completion may rank them down the list.

Cumbria in fourth place is a good example of this. There were 345 hazards reported with 332 incidents fixed. They only had a 98% fix rate compared to the top 3, which all had 100% fix rates.

The worst local authority on the list in terms of the number of incidents reported and then fixed was Dumfries and Galloway, which had 215 hazards reported but have so far only fixed nine. Central Bedfordshire also deserves being shamed for having only fixed 10 incidents out of 134 reported.

Surrey had the most number of hazards reported at 2,653 and has fixed 648 of them so far. Transport for London with all its resources sits 196 in the list with only 63 repairs from the 493 hazards reported, a 13% fix rate.
