New rides for 2012 in Action Medical Research cycling calendar

Charity-run bike rides appear to be booming. A fact highlighted by the recent announcement from Action Medical Research that it will be running 25 rides in 2012 including three new ones exclusively for women (link to website here).

The children’s charity, which is celebrating its 60^th anniversary in 2012, has beefed up its ride schedule this year to provide different cycling challenges that it believes will be accessible to riders with differing types of ability.

London to Paris and women only rides

Heading up the new Action Medical Research programme is the charity’s flagship London to Paris tour (18 - 22 July 2012).. There are three alternative routes, open to all, including a three-day, faster option for the most dedicated riders. For the first time there will also be a women-only route.

Women riders will also see an extended DIVA100 series this year with new events in Scotland and The Midlands in addition to the original ride in Sussex. The rides, which all take place in May, will offer 100km or 50km route options.

UK events

Still in the UK, Action will continue to run the nine day UK End 2 End (from Lands End to John O’ Groats) cycle ride as well as the RIDE24 endurance relay, which sees teams race day and night for 24 hours at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

The charity’s RIDE100 series in the UK also continues to offer a range of one-day regional UK rides in locations such as the Lake District, Peak District and Scotland’s Trossachs mountains. These graded events are all chip timed and offer both a 100-mile and 100km route option. The RIDE100 and DIVA100 rides are being underpinned by support from bike maker Trek.

Overseas

There are two new overseas rides that will be launched this year from Action. First in July, the Morocco Bike or Hike, will see the charity offer a mountain biking challenge in the Atlas Mountains or, for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, a trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal, the region’s highest peak, overlooking the Sahara Desert.

Following from this, in September, Action will return to France, with its Ride L’Etape tour (6 - 9 September 2012). This ride will replicate stage 19 from last year’s Tour de France. The 116km ride passes through the French Alps and tackles three of the Tour’s most notorious climbs – Col du Télégraphe, Col du Galibier and Alpe d’Huez.

Money raised by Action Medical Research through its cycling programme helps fund vital medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Research currently being supported by Action Medical Research includes work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and premature birth.
