Lord Sugar suggests ID for cyclists

Interesting comments from Lord Sugar this afternoon in a debate in the House of Lords on current cycling laws. Lord Sugar, who is a keen cyclist, and known more these days for the BBC Show The Apprentice, suggested that the government should consider allowing the police to confiscate the bikes of cyclists who do not carrying identification documents.

Lord Sugar made his comments as he asked government transport spokesman Earl Attlee whether it was mandatory for a cyclist using the roads to carry some form of identification on them.

“In the United States of America we are told to carry identification with us so that the police can take action against people who are riding on pavements or jumping lights.
“If you don’t have identification with you, they confiscate your bike and it is up to you to go and get it back and pay a big fine.”

No intention to introduce ID

Lord Attlee replied that the Government had “no intention” of requiring cyclists to carry identification. Well there’s a relief

The rest of the debate had comments and experience you would typically expect of the House of Lords with demands that the government take a firmer stance on cyclists who break the law.

Lord Sugar tweeted this morning (December 9th): “Cyclists should carry some form of ID, so they can get nicked by police for jumping pavement or lights. Otherwise they just lie who they are.”
