London to Southend bike ride

Summer managed to stick around for our cycle ride to Southend this past Sunday. The unseasonally hot weather (temperatures of 28 degrees) did not deter a strong group of Going Going Bikers taking part in the ride, the third open invitation ride we have now organised.

Our starting point for the ride to Southend was the Euphorium Bakery in Islington. There is no better way to start any ride than a few pastries, cake and coffee. The food would provide the energy for our route out of London and into the Essex countryside.

A lunch stop was built into the ride and we stopped at The Thatchers Arms in Great Warley, which is just outside Brentwood. After some nosh and some beverages to replenish lost fluids, our route to Southend meandered through country lanes and villages in the Essex countryside towards our final destination.

With a few welcome beers in hand, we had enough to time enjoy some of the afternoon sun and a stunning sunset on the seafront in Southend before returning to London by train.

London to Southend is a fairly flat whatever route you choose. Any climbs tend to be short and sharp but nothing to worry about. Our particular route to Southend was 60 miles plus.

Join us on the next ride

We are now busy planning a Going Going Bike open invitation ride for November 12. This ride will be a shorter distance as well as sticking closer to the Greater London conurbation.

We would love loads more people to join us on our rides. They are casual and fun affairs. Just “Turn up and Ride” is our motto. Bob, one of our number on the journey to Southend, decided to do just that and rode the trip on his recumbent.
