London Bicycle Film Festival 2012

This Thursday sees the start of the annual London Bicycle Film Festival (BFF). Based at the Barbican Centre, the London BFF is now in its ninth season and continues to be a popular cultural event among the cycling public both in and out of the capital.

Over four days (October 4-7), the BFF will be showing a host of films and short films with cycling themes. There are also events taking place that are associated with the festival.

Feature Films

Feature film highlights include the World Premiere of Line of Sight (Dir. Benny Zenga) by legendary cycling cinematographer Lucas Brunelle. Line of Sight captures the essence of alleycat races: the high-speed bike messenger races that take place on busy city streets throughout the world.

There is also a showcase of two of the best road cycling films from Ireland. One is the UK premiere of Ras Tailteann Men of the Ras, which is a documentary telling the story of one of Ireland’s greatest sporting institutions: the Rás Tailteann cycling race.

The other feature, Martin Dwan’s feature, Shay Elliot - Cycle of Betrayal, tells the story of Ireland’s first professional cyclist and the incredible events surrounding his career and life.

Also worth catching is L’Eroica (Dir. Morgan Bertacca), a film about Italia’s classic retro bike race that is run on gravel roads with 80’s bikes, woollen jerseys and fuelled by rich Italian food and wine.

Short films

Short films being shown include Candy Rides (Dir. Jason Giampietro), which explores the love of bikes and how it fits with love itself; BOY (Dir. Justin Chadwick), about love and loss, starring British actor Timothy Spall; Three-Legged Horses, an Edinburgh bike rickshaw driver determined to make enough money before his knees are permanently damaged; and Sister Session (Dir. Helen Habakuk, Doris Taaker, & Brett Astrid Vomma), an inspirational film that documents the first time women were allowed to compete at a particular major BMX event.

Party Time

Fringe events associated with the festival include the opening night party at Bikeworks on Cambridge Heath Rd, Bethnal Green (7pm start), the Rollapaluza Roller Race (October 7th, Hoxton Bar and Grill, 8PM) the annual Bike Polo Tournament and a BMX jam (October 6th) hosted by Albion BMX mag.

There will also be a free cycling Symposium, presented in collaboration with Transport for London, with debates, discussions and presentations on the future of cycling in London at the Barbican after the festival finishes (on the 12th of October).
