Irish look to extend bike hire scheme to other cities

Dublin’s bike hire scheme has proved so successful that the Irish government is to give its backing to a possible roll out of similar schemes to other Irish cities

Consultations on setting up schemes in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford are to be given the go-ahead by the Irish government. These consultations will bring together the city councils, cycling campaigners and potential sponsors in each city to discuss whether a bike hire scheme could work.

Government backing

A government study carried out by the National Transport Authority has already concluded an extension to some Irish cities is technically feasible.

Dublin’s success

Dublinbikes, which debuted in 2009, is sponsored by outdoor advertising agency JCDecaux, which received a number of advertising sites across the city in return for sponsoring the scheme.

Since the scheme started in Dublin, more than 47,000 subscribers have joined up to use the bike hire bikes, while an expansion plan will see the number of bike stations across the city increased from 41 to about 300 and numbers of bikes from 500 to 5,000 over five years.
