All go for a summer of cycling
ShareThis
A Summer of Cycling? Sounds a great idea doesn’t it? Twenty three cycling organisations seem to think so and have come together to agree on a joint promotion of the theme for the summer of 2012 when cycling will very much be in focus with the Olympics taking place.
The organisations hope that the Summer of Cycling will be a celebration of every part of cycling, from the activity being a sport, a recreational pursuit and a means of transport.
Support
Organisation putting their weight behind the initiative include British Cycling, CTC, Sustrans, London Cycling Campaign, Cycling Scotland, the Bicycle Association, Bike Week, Transport for London, the Association of Cycle Traders, Halfords, the Tour of Britain, Cyclenation and the Cycle to Work Alliance.
These organisations and others met in November at the House of Commons to attend a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group, where Julian Huppert, the Lib Dem MP for Cambridge, proposed the idea for the Summer of Cycling.
More details soon
At the moment, details for exactly what the promotion will entail are still being worked out between the organisations and future meetings are planned but all the parties agreed that the Summer of Cycling should be promoted just as easily for local cycle campaign groups as it would be for racing organisations. The promotion will be open to any business, any organisation, any club, any individual, any blogger, or any magazine or any website.
A website, Summerofcycling.net, is already up and there is expected to be more details about the promotion and events set up around it in the New Year.
