Agreement aims to take the cycling revolution to the track

The increasing public profile of track cycling could grow further after an agreement was signed between all three of the major venues in the UK to cooperate and take track cycling events around the UK.

The agreement between Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, which will own and run the Olympic Velodrome after the Games, the National Cycling Centre, Manchester, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow and British Cycling, will see the popular Revolution track Series hold events at the newly built velodrome venues in London and Glasgow. The series currently resides permanently in Manchester.

New events

Apart from the Revolution series, all the venues and British Cycling will work together to launch new track cycling events in the UK aimed at people of all abilities as well as bring international events such as the World Cup and World Championships to the UK. The main aim of the agreement is to ensure that Great Britain continues to unearth cycling stars for the future.

The venues will also collaborate on operational issues involved in the running of their buildings and how best to use public money given to them.

Legacy

Brian Cookson OBE, President of British Cycling, commenting on the agreement between the three venues, said that this was an “exciting” time for the sport of cycling and through working closely with Manchester, Glasgow and London, British Cycling looked forward to continuing to grow the sport and provide a lasting legacy for track cycling.

“The signing of this agreement ensures we maximise the benefits of having three world-class facilities in terms of our ability to bid for and host major events which bring the world’s leading riders to our shores.

“It also means we can provide more opportunities for more people to get into the sport.

“What could be more inspiring for riders, young or old, to give it a go themselves by being able to do so on the tracks that the likes of Hoy and Pendleton have ridden?”

The Glasgow velodrome will open in October with London’s Olympic venue being handed over to Lee Valley Regional Park Authority in mid 2013. The Olympic Velodrome will form part of the Lee Valley VeloPark, which will include the Olympic BMX Track circuit, mountain bike trails, and a specially built road circuit.
