A step in the right direction

We all know Copenhagen is a mecca for cycle friendliness but a recent innovation from the city council is taking this one step further with a footrest for cyclists at traffic junctions.
The footrests form the lower part of a double railing with the higher railing allowing you to place your hand there for balance.
Expansion
After an initial trial period where five footrests were installed in 2010, the footrests are now being expanded to 20 other locations this year.
The footrests are printed with encouraging statements, such as “Hello, cyclist! Take a breather,” and “Thank you for cycling!”
A really nice idea, but not sure it will catch on in the UK though. I can see the Daily Mail headlines and outrage if councils spent money on bicycle footrests here.
