A cycling tale of two cities

The cities of Cambridge and York are running a Cycling Challenge from March 14 to April 3 to see which city can encourage the most new cyclists to ride a bike during the challenge period.
Both cities are asking businesses, schools and other organisations to pledge their support by entering teams and persuading as many people as possible to get involved. The cities are of course in competition with each other to see who has the most people taking part in the challenge.
The idea is to get as many people as possible across both cities to cycle for at least ten minutes. The hope is that once people have got the bug to start cycling they will continue to cycle thereafter.
Cyclists signing up
Participants in both cities will be able cycle at a time to suit them and can then log details of their rides on the dedicated York Cycle Challenge and Cambridge Cycle Challenge websites. You will be able to see live results on the numbers who sign up on the respective websites of both York and Cambridge throughout the competition.
Cycle for prizes
As part of the challenge, prizes are open to individuals and organisations that sign up. For instance if a person encourages someone else (who hasn’t ridden a bike in over a year) to ride a bike for at least 10 minutes in the challenge period they both receive a free cinema ticket.
All individuals who are signed up will be entered into a prized draw for his/her bicycles, while team/organisation entrants can win shopping vouchers.
The York and Cambridge Cycle Challenges are organised in conjunction with the CTC and Challenge for Change. Challenge for Change is a social marketing agency specialising in developing behavioural change programmes that get more people cycling more often.
